http://mostlymyvw.18.forumer.com/index.php?s=36329d1b05b529f1ad712a7439ff7ddf&showtopic=1307&st=0"The most common is 4.37 (4.375 in actual) for the 1200 and 1300 cc.
Next is the 4.12 for the 1600 cc and all SEMI AUTO Beetle. The STRONGEST and
the Best for HIGHWAY is the 3.88 (3.875 in actual) It is also suitable for Hill
climbing because of the3.78 1st Gear Ratio as compare to the 3.80 on Normal
GearBox. The 3.88 R & P is HARD to find because it is mostly on the 1973 Up for
SuperBeetle and Convertible and mostly IRS.
For those Swing Axle Owners who want this Ratio, Actually can just
" Transfer " all the Internal from this IRS to a SWING AXLE LATE CASING (the
one Using a Large Round Pinion NUT). And NOT the OLD Case using the 4 Bolts
Nut type. The Only major changes is to Unbolt the 8 Ring Gear NUTS holding the
RING GEAR to the IRS Spool & Differential and BOLTING IT Back to the Swing
Axle Differential. You MUST USE the SHIMS from the IRS PINION and Not the
old swing Axle Shims. In other word, the IRS GEAR CARRIER and its content is ALL
Transfered to your Swing Axle Gear Casing, Plus the RING GEAR bolted to the
Swing Axle Differential.
Normally, the PINION depth have to be checked with Special Tool. BUT if
you USE THE ORIGINAL SHIMS from the IRS, you are safe.VW GEARBOX Internal, whether SWING AXLE OR IRS are the SAME.
The only Difference is the Differential and SIDE COVER. IRS 73 Up have
even the Single Sided SIDE COVER and you cannot convert to Swing Axle.
BUT the Swing Axle Casing can be used and converted to IRS by changing the
Differential and SIDE COVER.
The 3.88 R & P is by far the STRONGEST STOCK. its Ring Gear has
31 Tooths compared to a 4.37 of 35 Tooths.
But it doesn't mean that by using a 3.88 Ratio GearBox on a 1200 cc can make
the Car go Fastest. In reality, you 1200 or 1300 will " Run out of breath " at the
Top Speed because of the small Engine power.
The 3.88 Ratio is ideal for 1600 and above and that is where Speed is gained. For the 1200 and 1300, just stick to the 4.37 or 4.12 Ratio.
I have mine from an IRS Gearbox with Code Number AT (73 Ups) IRS with 1
sided Side Cover Which I will use on my IRS set up.
