How To Re-Polarize Your Dynamo

After leaving your vehicle standing for long periods with a flat battery or replacing your dynamo you may need to re-polarize it.  To enable it to charge the battery correctly

   1. Disconnect battery
   2. Remove fan belt
   3. Remove all wires from dynamo
   4. Take a length of wire from the battery ''+'' terminal to the ''D+'' terminal on dynamo
   5.  Take a wire from battery ''-'' terminal to ''D-'' terminal on dynamo, then link ''D-'' to ''DF''.

The dynamo will turn like an electric motor.

6.  After 10 secs remove wires, and reconnect original connections.

When converting 6 to 12 volt you will need a new dynamo stand and dynamo backing plate.

When changing from dynamo to alternator you will also need to change the stand and backing plate.

*12 volt flywheel has 130 teeth
6 volt flywheel has 109 teeth

Seats

Pre 1971 Beetles have narrow runners
''71 to ''73 Beetles have wide runners
Beetles ''74 on and all 1303 models have centre rail seats (a hump on the floor)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Standard Beetle tyres are: 155 x 15 (most comman) and 165 x 15 (less comman)
Type 2: 185 x 14
Beetles before 1967 have 5 stud wheels.
1500 & ''68 on Beetles have 4 stud wheels

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beetle rear windows changed in 1971.
If you measure the height of the glass inside the rubber from the top to bottom this will help when ordering glass.
up to ''71 = 395cm
''71 on = 435cm

Type 2 Side windows: standard glass is flat, conversion glass curves out and sits proud of the body.
